My 8-year-old golden still limping with a bone fragment. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | 8 years and 4 months old | 50 lbs

My 8-yr old golden retriever limped (right hind leg) recently. Took X-ray. There is a lose bone fragment floating around. Prescribed Rimadyl 75mg for 5 days. It improved but then he gets limp easily. What has happened? What can we do? Thanks a lot

Generally that little piece of bone will eventually scar down to the joint capsule and will not cause much of a problem. If it becomes a chronic source of lameness, it can likely be arthroscopically removed. The thought is that maybe there was some arthritis forming and a small piece broke off. It could also be the result of trauma or a developmental condition causing a flap of unhealthy bone to form of the femoral head that eventually broke off.
