My cat has a mouth sore with pus and swelling. How can I treat it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 9 years and 3 months old | 15 lbs

Cat has a small sore on side of the mouth. He had some puss come out. I wiped it with kleenex, until blood came out. I thought it was getting better, but I came home, and he had dried blood all around it. I assumed he scratched it, causing it to open and bleed. He seems to have some swelling that hasn't come down since the puss came out. But it also doesn't seem like it's getting bigger. He doesn't show any signs of being lethargic or having a fever. Is there anything I could do to treat him?

Hi there. That wound on Phish could be a big pustule from feline acne or it could also be from a tooth root abscess. I would soak the area with warm water Epsom salt compresses twice daily for the next few days. If he is not improving then he should be evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Often antibiotics are needed in cases of feline acne. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.
