What safe pain relief can I give my dog with GI disease and ascites?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 4 years and 10 months old | 31 lbs

My dog has been diagnosed with GI disease, and has ascites. He has just been put on metronidazole 250mg and spironolactone 25mg . What can I give him for the pain? Someone said buffered aspirin, like Bayer. Is this true?

I am so sorry you and Prince are going through this. Pain medications meant for humans can be very dangerous (and even deadly) for dogs, so I do not recommend giving any to Prince without consulting with your vet. Your veterinarian can prescribe safe medication to help with the pain, but aspirin may be dangerous for Prince, especially in his current condition.
