My pet licks wound cream with cone on. Is it toxic? What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Female | unspayed | 6 months and 27 days old | 3.9 lbs

Mia has been licking the silver sulfadiazine cream her vet prescribed her for some stitches she opened up from her spay surgery and a leg wound - she's doing this even with her cone on. Is it toxic for her? If so, what should I look out for and/or do? I've quaratined her, and kept her cone on, I'm trying to monitor her...I am just super concerned.

It is not toxic but not beneficial to the wounds if she licks it right off. It sounds like you need a large e collar since she can still reach all these places. Try to apply the medicine right before you feed her, as this may distract her some. Go to your vet tomorrow or the pet store and get a large e collar so she cannot reach the areas.
