My dog is lethargic after ear infection meds. Is it a side effect?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Saint Bernard | Male | unneutered | 7 months and 17 days old

My St Bernard has had quite a bad ear infection, vet has given us Macrolone which he has been on for about 8 days & now decreasing dosage. He’s not his boisterous self, especially last couple of days. He seems very lethargic & depressed. This morning I got up walking around house & making breakfast, he looked at me but didn’t even move, he’s been laying in the same spot for hours, which is definately not like him. I’m a little worried. Hopefully it’s just the medication??

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Macrolone contains a steroid but is not expected to result in side effects like the ones you describe. The only instance where that medication could result in such side effects is if for example it is causing like gastrointestinal ulceration and anemia. In that case you may notice black tarry stools and his gums may look pale. If that is the case, I recommend that you have him evaluated as soon as possible as that may represent a medical emergency. Otherwise, severe lethargy can be observed with a variety of conditions going from anemia to pain/discomfort. I recommend that you have him evaluated by a veterinarian soon as that degree of lethargy is not expected from that medication and is likely something else going on. Good luck!
