My kitten is making weird puffing noises. Does she need a vet?

Unfortunately kittens are susceptible to many viruses that infect the respiratory tract and can cause noise, running eyes and noses and general ill health. There is little to do for a virus aside from administering antinflammatories which you would need to have prescribed by a vet. However I would recommend taking the kitten in for an exam as the viruses can make way for bacterial infection and the vet can give antibiotics if needed. In the mean time keep the kitten in stress and draught free environment.

Cardiac problems can be another cause of breathing problems, but they are rare in kittens with it occurring in only 1-2%. I simply mention cardiac problems because Ragdolls are prone to them genetically. I would have Lilly seen by a vet for a physical exam, blood tests, urinalysis, and x-rays. The vet can determine what has caused these episodes and can discuss treatment options with you.

If Tweety is currently open mouth breathing, then that is not normal, and he needs to see a vet immediately. It is a sign of respiratory distress. If this sound is only made while he is sleeping, he could be snoring or dreaming, as if he was having trouble breathing, I would expect to see it while he was awake as well. To be safe, it's always a good idea to have him examined by a vet.

It sounds like Cleopatra may be picking up an infection. Viral infections and bacterial infections are common. Allergies are also possible but less likely. Go ahead and get Cleopatra started on a cat supplement called Lysine. Kittens take 250mg every 12 hours. This may help if it is a viral infection. Monitor her very closely for worsening of the sneezing/wheezing, decreased appetite, lethargy or signs that her eyes may be infected. Sometimes the infections can be mild and self limiting, but sometimes they get worse. If you see any signs of worsening illness, take her in to see her veterinarian. She does not need to go to the vet at this point. These upper respiratory infections are generally viral, so there are no simple medications that will clear the infection. If she gets lethargic , stops eating, or the discharge becomes green or thick I would call your veterinarian for an exam. Hope Ariel is back to herself very soon!

An upper respiratory tract infection (URI) due to a viral or bacterial infection is the most common reason for congestion in kittens. Common signs of a URI are: congestion, raspy throat breathing, nasal or eye discharge, sneezing and coughing. Herpes virus is the most common cause and usually runs it's course but it can lead to a secondary bacterial infection. If the nasal discharge is yellow or green, he is lethargic and not eating well that indicates a need to be seen by your Vet. If he is eating and drinking then you can watch him since it has only been 2 days since you adopted him. If his symptoms persist for a week or more then he should be seen. Have a good day!
