My quail was injured. Why is she falling forward when she walks?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 17 days old | 1lb

Two days ago, my quail, Frodo, injured herself on a sharp piece of corrugated iron. Her abdomen, just above her legs, had the skin and feathers damaged, but the cut was not overly deep and didn't bleed excessively. We put betadine (povidone-iodine) on her injury and kept her in a darkened cage to prevent shock. She seems fine two days later, but her walking is particularly unusual. She has no trouble standing, but when she walks, she bowls over forwards and has to use her wings to right herself.

I'm sorry to hear this! It sounds like this is likely related to the laceration, it could be that she is painful/swollen which is making her walk oddly. However there could potentially has been some damage to the nerves that run into the legs. If she is eating well and otherwise bright I would give her a day or so with minimal stress to see if she improves. If however, you feel that she is deteriorating or not improving I would take her to a vet as she may need some antinflammatory medication.
