My puppy bites her collar. How can I get her to wear it comfortably?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 10 months and 17 days old | 10.6 lbs

What is the best approach to getting my puppy to wear her collar? She’s my first puppy I have no idea whether or not the collar fits properly or not. I can fit two fingers in but the collar rotates and she’s not used to wearing it so she bites at the clip. She wears a vest when we go for walks I just want her to get used to the collar in case + her tags will be on her collar. So far she’s not biting at it 24/7 but when she notices the clip she does.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It sounds like you are doing everything right. Normally, if you are able to fit 2 fingers then yes that should be ok. You can try to give her a treat when you put the collar on so that she starts associating the collar with something positive. They do get used to it relatively quickly within days to weeks. It may just take a bit longer for her. Good luck!
