Why is my ferret sick and lethargic after introducing a new one?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Unknown - Small Animal | Female | spayed | 2 lbs

I've had my first ferret for about 3 years, her name is Phyllis. I got another ferret a couple days ago, his name is Oswald. Not sure if this is all related, but since I got Os, Phyll has been acting differently. Lack of wanting to play. She's been shaky and had a seedylike stool. Also seems like all she wants to do is sleep.

I'm sorry to hear that Phyllis has been unwell. It is possible that Phyllis acquired some type of gastrointestinal infection or parasite from Oswald, resulting in lethargy and soft stool. Are the two ferrets getting along? It is also possible that her symptoms may be related to stress if she is unhappy with the new roommate or if they are fighting. In either case, I would suggest taking her to a vet to perform a physical exam and test her stool to rule out a medical issue, and get her the treatment she needs to get her feeling better as soon as possible. I hope this helps! Thank you for using Pet Coach.
