My dog limps after shoulder surgery. What can I give for his pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature American Shepherd | Male | neutered | 6 years and 1 month old | 38 lbs

My Australian Shepherd has had shoulder surgery. He had the tendon moved from inside to support the outside as well as pins and screws put in. Some days he limps bad. Almost to the point he doesn’t want to put weight on it. Rest a day or two and he walks normal. Is there something I can give him to minimize the bad days or make the bad days less painful?

There are prescription pain medications you should discuss with your veterinarian. Anti-inflammatory medications like Rimadyl, Metacam, or Galliprant are all possible options for pain control. Please remember there are no safe over the counter pain medications for dogs so you will need to get these from your veterinarian. There are also other pain control options including other types of prescription medications, acupuncture, and laser therapy. These would also be worthwhile options for Marble to discuss with your veterinarian. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
