Why is my senior hamster pooping and peeing too much in his wheel?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Unknown - Small Animal | Female | spayed | 1 year and 1 month old

My hamster is a senior, at a year and three months and has been excessively pooping/peeing in his wheel of his cage. It’s gotten to a point where it’s almost covering the entirety of the wheel. I don’t know what’s wrong or how I can help him.

It sounds like Brizzo may be having diarrhea - which can be caused by intestinal parasites, or bacterial and viral infections. I recommend having Brizzo seen by a vet to determine what is going on and begin the appropriate treatment. While Brizzo is older, hamsters can live up to 2-3 years, and would benefit from treatment. I hope this helps and that Brizzo gets well soon!
