My dog is walking slow, head down, back arched. Is she in pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bernese Mountain Dog | Female | spayed | 5 years and 11 months old | 95 lbs

Our dog is walking around gingerly and slow with her head down and back arched. She will move her head up and down but has been lathargic all day. Thoughts on what this could be?

Poor Ellie! It sounds like she is in a lot of pain. The stance you are describing could indicate neck or back pain. It could also be related to severe digestive pain caused by pancreatitis or infection. I'd recommend having Ellie seen by a veterinarian right away. She may need prescription pain medication to treat her condition. Please remember there are no safe over the counter pain medications for dogs so you will need to get these from a veterinarian. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach and I hope Ellie is feeling better soon!
