My dog is lethargic. When should I take her to an emergency vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bernese Mountain Dog | Female | spayed | 5 years and 11 months old | 95 lbs

Our dog is very lethargic the last 12 hours and isn’t acting like herself. She is walking with her head down. She is drinking water and eating a little bit but something is off. Should we take her to the emergency vet?

With vague symptoms such as generalized lethargy, there is no right or wrong answer to taking her now vs waiting until the morning to see if anything changes. If she is vomiting or has diarrhea then I would take her for sure. Since she is still eating and drinking, you can monitor her for further changes such as those before going in. IF she is not better after 24 hours then I would get her checked also. If you will feel better and sleep better by having her checked tonight, then that is the best option for you.

Lethargy can be a sign of illness, but it's a general sign of many illnesses. The best thing to do is keep an eye on Baya tonight. If she is still acting this way in the morning, then I would take her into the vet. If she shows other signs such as vomiting, diarrhea, or a loss of appetite, take her into a vet asap. I hope this helps!
