My puppy is hacking and coughing white foam. What else could it be?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund miniature | Female | spayed | 4 months and 29 days old | 17 lbs

My puppy has been hacking/coughing with some mucus white foam here and there for the last 8 hours. We took her to the vet and they recommended Sulfacrate. We haven't given it to her yet. Could it be something else?

Hello, and thank you for your question. I'm sorry to hear that Eclaire has been unwell. Sucralfate is a gastroprotectant typically used if stomach ulcers or intestinal bleeding are suspected, e.g. if she has been vomiting. Even if she did not have these problems, it should still be safe to give. Another possibility for hacking/coughing would be an upper respiratory infection (e.g. kennel cough) or pneumonia. If Eclaire does not improve within the next 24 hours, I would suggest taking her back to the vet for re-evaluation. I hope this helps, and that Eclaire is feeling better soon!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Eclaire! It sounds like Eclaire is coughing with a terminal retch. Dogs can cough so hard it stimulates their gag reflex and they can vomit up white foam and sometime even food and bile. Common causes of coughing in a young dog are: kennel cough, pneumonia, other viral infections. It is best to have Eclaire seen by a Vet for an exam. The vet will likely prescribe antibiotics and cough suppressants. I hope this helps and I wish Eclaire a speedy recovery!
