My Old English Bulldog's ear is swollen with liquid. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | English Bulldog | Male | unneutered | 5 years old | 85 lbs

My Old English Bulldogs ear, the flappy part, is either swollen or filled with liquid. He’s letting me touch it, so i gather he’s not in pain; but What should i do? Is there any medication i can give him?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Mac! It sounds as though Mac has an Aural (ear) Hematoma. Ear hematomas results from a break in the ear cartilage or a bleeding vessel that causes blood to fill up in the ear pinna. Most commonly this is due to shaking of the head due to an ear infection from yeast or bacteria. Seeing that Mac is an English bull dog and this breed is very predisposed to ear and skin infections that is very likely the cause. Mac needs to see a Vet to have his ears checked, medicated ear drops and ear flush need to be prescribed. As for the ear hematoma there are many options for treatment: either medical management with steroids or surgery. Your vet will discuss the best choice for Mac. I hope this helps and I wish Mac a speedy recovery!
