Why is my 5-month kitten's loose stool bloody after diet changes?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Bengal | Male | neutered | 5 months and 24 days old | 5 lbs

My 5 month old kitten has had loose stool for a couple weeks. I took him to the vet about a month and a half ago and said it may be due to his diet changing. I had him on blue buffalo kitten food, then grain free, and now sensitive stomach. I have started to add probiotics to his food. This morning I found what I think is blood in his stool. Other than the loose stools and now blood he is a happy go lucky cat and exhibits no other signs of illness.

Hi there. I am suspicious that Taro may have a gastrointestinal parasite. Even if he has had a negative fecal exam I would still repeat another one. Fecal examinations are about 80% accurate as the body is not always shedding parasites eggs. If the next fecal is negative then I would request a GI fecal PCR panel. This is a test that looks for DNA of multiple gastrointestinal pathogens. Best of luck and I hope he improves soon! Thank you for using Pet Coach.
