My dog has a new hard lump above her belly button. Is it a hernia?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 40.1 lbs

I have a 1.5 yr old female dog that has a nickle size hard lump above her umbilical. It appeared a day ago. Concerned because it's hard and not soft like most hernias. She acts normal E/D: normal Bm: normal activities: normal.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. She may have developed a umbilical cyst and not necessarily a hernia. These are typically benign and cause no harm. If you want to be sure of what this is, I would recommend having your veterinarian examine Roxy and this area to help better determine what this could be. Additional testing such as a fine needle aspirate, where the vet inserts a small needle into the lump and looks at the cells under the microscope, can easily be done. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further!

This lump appears to be over Mommy's umbilicus so I suspect it is an umbilical hernia, where a little bit of fat from inside her tummy protrudes through a defect in her muscle. As long as she is in good form and going to the toilet it is likely just a fat hernia. I would definitely get it checked out though as sometimes the defect in the muscle needs repaired as it is big enough to let more imoortant structures herniate.
