My dog's butt is red and inflamed from scooting. What can I apply?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Male | neutered | 2 years old | 35 lbs

My dog is scooting his butt across the ground. He’s butt is inflamed and really red. I have wormed him and had his anal glands expressed. He is licking and just seems too uncomfortable to lay down or sit.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. I would recommend applying a topical medication such as zymox topical ointment to the affected area twice daily until resolved. This red and inflamed area is likely due to Cooper rubbing his bottom on the floor and should resolve, as long as he is not licking at the area. This ointment can be found online quite eaily. I hope this help! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

Since he is so uncomfortable, he should be seen as soon as possible. If your veterinarian is unavailable, consider the nearest veterinary ER. He may have impacted anal glands that may be starting to abscess. They should be expressed (emptied). He may need antibiotics for infection and anti-inflammatory medication for pain management. If he is licking, place an e-collar (cone) on him. Diapers can be used to protect his sensitive bits from further abrasion.
