My chinchilla has a small cut. What's the best way to clean it safely?

Thanks for reaching out about Midnight and including a photo. This is a wound and not something contagious from the cat. Could be a bite or scratch though. Neosporin can cause serious harm if ingested by the chinchilla, so DO NOT APPLY. Do not allow a dust bath. You can gently clean with warm water and a mild soap, but agree this needs veterinary attention tomorrow for at least minor wound care (shave to remove hair from contaminating the wound) and oral antibiotics. Hello. The cut could use some stitches, but as long as you keep it clean & treated, it should heal just fine. I would clean the wound with a good skin antiseptic like Hibiclens ( available at all pharmacies ) & clean at least twice a day. Then apply your spray. It will heal & thanks for using Boop by Petco.

Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths twice daily. If the cut does not heal in the next 4-5 days or is worsening a check up would be required. Neosporin is not needed at this stage, if the cut is small and minor as you described, disinfection will be enough. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any scratching (if any). A small amount of moisture is not too big of a deal as it is likely to dry on its own with reasonable quickness. If the area becomes soiled or dirty WITHOUT mats, RoRo will be able to clean the area herself. Should mats form, you will have to deal with these manually either by brushing or a sanitary clipping.

Clean this once or twice a day with a skin antiseptic like Hibiclens ( available in all pharmacies ) & dab the wound with just a tiny bit of triple antibiotic. If this does not heal in 10-14 days, do see your vet. Rats are prone to developing tumors, so you should have a non-healing wound looked at. But if it appears to be healing with this treatment, it is very unlikely to be worrisome. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

I am sorry to hear about your pup! Ideally we would use a chlorhexidine soap while being careful not to get it in the eye. You can purchase this at most drug stores under the trade name Hibiclens or the store may have a generic version. After cleaning you can apply a topical antibiotic ointment and monitor the area for increased bleeding, swelling, or yellow/green discharge which can be a sign of infection and veterinary care will be needed. If you discover the wound gets larger/appears to open up after cleaning then sutures (stitches) may be needed by the vet.

That could be completely normal. I would recommend to wait 3-4 days and then gently wash the area with water and very diluted soap. This will certainly get rid of the oily remnants of the product. Unfortunately these are signs that are likely to be due to a moderate conjunctivitis, probably secondary to an infection. A check up would be needed as appropriate treatment would include antibiotics and anti-inflammatory eye drops. Corneal injuries must be ruled out as well. No effective home remedies seem possible at this stage.
