Dog's allergic rash: What natural creams or lotions can I use?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Female | unspayed | 4 years and 7 months old | 4 lbs

Bella has crusty red rash on the top of her chest and on the top tail area and the black pigments on her tummy seems to be increasing and not fading as our vet said. He also said that it is an allergic reaction to the diet we have fed her and now we've changed back to Hypoallergenic Royal Canine. Now I'm wondering if you could recommend me some type of natural products that might be helpful to help her with her issues (creme or lotion)? Thank you.

Hello, and I'm sorry to hear about Bella's ongoing skin issues. I'm glad that you are feeding her a hypoallergenic diet. Ensure that it is a strict diet with no other treats, table scraps, or things she picks up on walks (easier said than done sometimes!), for at least 8-12 weeks. As far as the rash goes, she may need anti-inflammatory medications and/or antibiotics to help heal it. This is something your vet can prescribe. You can also bathe her a few times weekly with an antiseptic shampoo. Ensure that you leave the shampoo on for about 10 minutes, then rinse with lukewarm water. This will help to prevent skin infections from flaring up again. Depending on her allergy profile, she may also benefit from omega 3 fish oil supplementation in her food, which can help strengthen the skin and coat. I hope this helps, and that Bella is feeling better soon!

Hello. It sounds like poor Bella has atopy, a form of inhalant allergies. The only way to deal with this is to use allergy specific medications, or to have Bella allergy tested & started on immunotherapy. Pit Bull Terriers are one of the most common breeds to suffer from allergies, so it is very, very common for veterinarians to deal with this. Atopica, Apoquel & Cytopoint are all excellent choices. Bella may also need to start antibiotics to eliminate any secondary skin infections, but with care & time, she can be made much more comfortable. Please speak with your veterinarian to see what treatments are appropriate for Bella & her allergies. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

That’s a pretty significant rash and home care may not heal that. Rashes can be problems by them selves or they can indicate an underlying issue such as parasites or allergies. If you want to try home care, Emma will need to wear an elizabethan collar at all times so that she cannot lick the rash or any topical treatments. You can wash the affected areas every day with soap and rinse well. Once it is dry, you can apply a dab of coconut oil to each lesion and rub it in well twice daily. Starting Emma on a doggie Omega fatty acid can also help improve the quality of her skin. If she does not start getting better within a week, have her seen by her veterinarian. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.
