My puppy has sudden vomiting, diarrhea, and won't eat or drink.

My shih tzu puppy, Max, has just recently threw up and had multiple diarrhea. He refuses to eat anything, he won’t even drink water! My family tried playing with him, but he would just sit around and watch. The problem is, he was just fine yesterday, and I don’t know what’s causing him to have these problems :(

It seems as Max is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking him to the vet the first chance you get, he will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection he will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better.

    Hello! It is quite possible that this is just related to separation anxiety. If Max is still eating well, playful, and just vomiting occasionally, I wouldn't worry, until they get home. But if he has loss of appetite, or diarrhea, or ongoing vomiting, then I would suggest calling your vet.

Hi there! Sorry to hear that Maxx is not feeling well. The clinical signs you describe are concerning when they occur in a puppy as they can be seen with serious gastrointestinal infections such as Parvovirus. Other possibilities include intestinal worms and dietary indiscretion, among other possibilities. The sooner these conditions are treated the better the outcome tends to be. For this reason, I recommend that you have Maxx evaluated by a veterinarian to check for these possibilities and to start therapy based on findings. At the very least they can address dehydration if present and start him on anti-nausea medications and other medications to try to make him feel better. You can try to feed him high palatable things like chicken and hamburger patties though if the primary issue is not addressed, this will unfortunately continue. I am afraid that he is getting dehydrated. Good luck! Keeping my fingers crossed for your boy!

Poor Max! Without any information about diagnostics, it’s hard to say. Viral infections like Parvo can cause this. An intestinal blockage could also cause the same signs. If there’s any chance that Max got into any human medications that could cause organ damage, he could also present this way. I recommend to have a discussion with your veterinarian and ask what the doctor is suspecting is going on. If Max has not been tested for Parvo yet or had any radiographs, these may be beneficial diagnostics. I hope your boy gets better soon! Please feel free to post any additional questions.

I’m so sorry to hear about Max! The best case scenario here is that Max has gastroenteritis (inflammation of the stomach and intestines). This is common after eating something naughty. Usually there is only a couple episodes of vomiting and the pet is eating within 24 hours. Often the diarrhea will last for a few days. HOWEVER, These are also signs that can occur if a something is stuck (or partially stuck) in the intestines. Because it was cloth, I am even more concerned about a linear foreign body- which can cause less vomiting but more damage to the intestines. Long story short, it’s time to see a vet for a good physical exam. Even if you have to visit the emergency clinic. Depending on what he or she finds, x-rays may be recommended. Many times, Fluids given under the skin or through an IV can be very helpful, even if the underlying problem is unclear. I hope this helps and best of luck to you and Max!

Hello, sorry to hear about Max. If max has vomited more than 4 times in one day or has developed Frank blood diarrhea, or if he is severely lethargic then he should be seen tonight as he could be very dehydrated. If he is otherwise stable and has some lethargy but is still acting somewhat like his normal self, then he can likely wait until the morning.
