How to potty train a puppy who hates wet or cold grass?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 2 months and 11 days old | 17 lbs

My puppy was getting the hang of potty training until a cold front came in. He HATES the wet, cold grass. If I put him in the grass he runs to the back door, and then immediately pees/poops in the House. Sometimes he’ll go on the porch, just to avoid the grass. Are there any tricks to get him to go in the grass even when it’s wet and cold? I definitely don’t want him to regress. Thank you!

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is a matter of patience and persistence. I would continue to carry him out onto the grass and keep him on a leash on the grass until he goes and then reward him with a treat. You might also consider purchasing a product called Fresh Patch, which is a patch of sod in a cardboard container that you place on the ground and is used as an area where Jasper can go to the bathroom in the house or on the patio. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns!
