My dog has chronic anal gland infections. Should I get them removed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Toy Poodle | Male | neutered | 4 years and 9 months old | 9 lbs

Marius has had months of anal gland infections and has had antibiotics, had his anal glands washed and packed four times and is now on a months course of antibiotics and atopica. If the infection comes straight back after this treatment, would you think I should have his anal glands removed? His feaces are big and bulky and he is on a very clean diet.

Poor Marius! I'm sorry he has been through so much recently! I think you should consider a trial or a prescription diet for food allergy first as many anal gland issues are related to food allergies. A diet like Royal Canin Ultamino would be a possible choice. However, if he still is having anal gland issues despite the prescription diet then surgical removal of the anal glands is probably the best choice. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach and best to you and Marius!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Nixon! I have heard of "infusing" the anal glands with an antibiotic/anti-inflammatory ointment. It does work well for a lot of dogs. Also be sure you understand that chronic anal gland issues tend to be allergy related. So consider changing Nixon's diet, trying medications for allergies, omega 3 fish oils, etc. It is worth a conversation about allergies and infusing the anal glands before removing them. I have also had success with a course of steroids for anal gland infections. I hope this helps and I wish Nixon the best!
