My Great Dane's hind legs kick. Is she losing feeling or is it DM?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Great Dane | Female | spayed | 105 lbs

Hello, My eight year old great dane has recently been experiencing bouts of involuntary kicking of her hind legs. She is still walking/running fine, but seems to have lost some feeling in her hind region; when she wags her tail, it hits her hind legs which it never used to do. She is still in good spirits! Based on the little research I've done, I'm not sure it's DM but I'm not ruling it out. If you could provide your expert opinion, that would be great!

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. Based on your description and the age and breed envy is, I would put degenerative myelopathy at the top of my list for sure. I would not rule out a spinal problem either causing impinging of the nerves going to the hind legs. Unfortunately the prognosis for DM is poor as there is no cure for the disease. I would recommend having envy examined by a veterinarian for a full neurological examination and to run some other tests such as xrays and CT scan to rule out other causes. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further!
