My cat is stumbling after metronidazole for IBS. Should I call vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 11 lbs

I gave my cat half a tablet of 250 mg metronidazole approximately 14 hours ago and when I got home, she was walking with her head down and stumbling a little bit. This was prescribed by a vet to help control IBS. She did eat her dinner and is alert. Is it ok to wait until the morning to contact my vet?

Some animals will have neurologic toxicity with metronidazole. I am suspicious that this may be causing her symptoms. However, other things could be causing it as well. If she continues to have problems this evening especially if they worsen then I would recommend she be seen tonight. If she seems to improve then I would see your regular veterinarian tomorrow. I would not give any more metronidazole until you see your veterinarian. Best of luck and I hope she improves soon! Thank you for using Pet Coach.
