My cat's skin is dark and rough after mat removal. Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 1 year and 11 months old

Hey, i’ve had to travel & leave my 2 cats with a friend. When i got them back, Thea had terrible mats around her neck & ear so i took her to a groomer. When i got her back she had patches in the areas where the mats were but the skin seemed fine. Now a week later the patches look dark & rough to touch though she isnt itching/licking it or anything & when i touch it she is fine it doesnt seem to hurt her. Could it be from the mats & that her hair is growing back? Or is it something more serious?

These dark specs are essentially embedded dirt. This stuff is difficult to remove, but will eventually return to normal with regular bathing and a few weeks of time. This is generally not concerning, and there's no signs of infection or irritation, but this can indicate a flea infestation, so it's good to check her carefully for any signs of fleas. Below is a helpful article about fleas. https://www.petcoach.co/article/5-tips-to-get-rid-of-fleas/ For now, I recommend bathing her with a cat shampoo once every week for the next four weeks. The skin should look normal again after a month. I hope that helps and all is well with Theadora.
