My cat has one kidney. How can I keep his remaining kidney healthy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Siamese | Male | 5 years and 11 months old | 11 lbs

Hi my cat had his kidney removed because he has polycystic disease. He is doing fine. The vet said his kidney was the size of a humans kidney. I asked if there are ways to prevent his kidney from developing cysts on his other kidney, he said no. :( Are there ways for us to keep his kidney healthy? I'm scared for kidney failure. We did blood work prior to make sure he could handle having one kidney. But I want to make sure I'm doing everything I can to keep him healthy.

Hello sorry to hear about Ashton but I am glad he is recovering well from his surgery. Polycystic kidney disease is typically one which affects both kidneys, however, because his other kidney is working well there are some things you can do to help promote that kidney's health. You should feed Ashton wet food and allow him free access to water. You should check his kidney values atleast every 3-6 months with bloodwork. A kidney diet may be considered if there is evidence that his other kidney may have increased values. Finally, ensure that the rest of his health is also good. I hope this helps and best of luck.
