My dog on heat has smelly discharge, drinks lots, and seems ill.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Staffordshire Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed | 8 years and 11 months old

My staff has been on heat for just over 3 weeks' and has quite a smelly odour. She's drinking more than usual and urinating often, she is eating her food. She doesn't seem to be herself and seems a little chesty. Please can you help? Many thanks

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am sorry to hear Leah isn't feeling well. I recommend taking her to a vet as soon as possible. It is hard to say for sure what is going on, but she could have a urinary tract infection or an infection inside her uterus. I am more concerned about the infection in her uterus and if that is the case, she needs immediate medical attention. The vet will likely need to check blood work and maybe take radiographs. If there is an infection, she may require surgery to remove her uterus. If not, they may need to start her on antibiotics. Good luck and kisses to Leah!
