My dog chases deer. How to manage his hunting instincts safely?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 60 lbs

My dog chases deer. We live in the country. He wears an orange hunting vest and blinking collar but I think last wk he really got one. He is ( genetic test) half Jindo n half Gold retrvr. Jindo is a deer hunting dog. I am soooo upset about this possible kill but I cannot keep him cooped up. He needs running and hunting every day to be happy and balanced. WHAT can I do?

Handsome boy! It’s rare for a dog by himself to catch a deer. If he did it was probably already weak or injured, or he had help. I recommend adding bells to his collar so they can hear him coming from farther away. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Foxy.
