My senior dog has severe ticks, bloody skin. How can I treat it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Male | neutered | 50 lbs

My dog is 12 years old He is a jack terrier . I am in love with all animals especially my best friend Rusty! Lately he’s had a lot of ticks because he likes to hide under a deck I have and I constantly try getting him out but he just loves it down their. I can tell he was consuming ticks from down their due to the amount I was picking off every time he went under. It seems it got so bad his back is bloody and you can see his skin and a lot of bumps.I don’t know what to do please help.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern! Poor Rusty! Ticks are no fun and can be quite painful when in large quantities. I would recommend using a flea and tick preventative such as Frontline, Nexgard or Bravecto. He will likely need a shampoo to help soothe his skin after the ticks die. I would recommend Douxo PS Calm shampoo, which can be easily found online. I hope this helps and that Rusty improves! Please let me know if you have any other questions / concerns!
