Why is my cat straining to pee, breathing heavy, and has a runny eye?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 1 year and 6 months old

Hi, my cat has been showing signs of pain when she is trying to urinate and will sit in her littler box for a while but nothing will come out. She has also urinated outside of her litter. She has one weepy eye that is running a lot. Shes also breathing very heavily.

I'm sorry to hear that Agatha isn't feeling well! These symptoms can be indicative of a urinary tract infection or blockage, which is can be very uncomfortable and painful. I recommend having her seen by a vet as soon as possible to determine what is going on and start the appropriate treatment. Your vet may need to perform some blood work and maybe a urine test to see if there are bacteria or crystals present in the urine. It is important to have Agatha seen as soon as possible because this condition can cause urine to back up into the kidneys, causing toxins to build up in the body and make her very sick.
