Is milk good for my dog's upset stomach or is it actually bad?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Toy Poodle | Female | spayed | 4 years and 11 months old

My toy poodle was never weaned from her mom. I got her at 3 months and have given her milk ever since. She likes milk and it seems to calm her stomach. Can this be so based on the negative comments about milk and dogs?

Most dogs do not tolerate cows milk. As they get older they do not have the proper enzymes to digest the lactose in the milk. I do know of some people who give their dogs milk and never have any problems. Baby girl does need a regimen of regular dog food though to ensure she is getting all the proper nutrients. If Babygirl commonly has an upset stomach the milk could actually be the problem. If she commonly has problems with her stomach, I would have your vet take a look at her to make sure there isn’t something else going on like intestinal parasites or a bacterial infection. Your vet will be able to talk to you in detail about her diet and the amount of milk she is receiving and whether taking off the milk will actually be more beneficial for her and her tummy. I hope this helps!
