Saliva not only helps to moisten food but it has enzymes which aid in the digestion of food. The stomach secretes stomach acid to aid in digestion and try to prevent against a toxin or poisoning problem. The pancreas secretes many enzymes to aid in digestion. The liver makes bile and the gall bladder secretes bile into the intestinal tract to aid in fat digestion. The digestive system secretes many chemical messengers in the form of chemicals and hormones which have to do with digestion. The colon or large intestine secretes mucous to aid in fecal elimination.
