My cat's paw is swollen after getting stuck. How can I help?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 1 year and 10 months old | 6 lbs

Last night my cat got her front paw stick between the bars on the back of a chair but I didn't find her until this morning and her paw was very swollen and there was a little blood by her thumb nail. Her paw was very cold and when I got her out it warmed up and now she isn't in much pain anymore and she can put some pressure on it now. I was just wondering how long the swelling will last and if there is anything I should do to help it?

I'm so sorry to hear about poor Peaches. That paw does look quite swollen. It is important that she get assessed by a vet to check for fractures or dislocations, or localized infection in the foot if there was a penetrating wound (possible given the evidence of blood). If it is a soft tissue injury only, I would expect swelling to decrease over the course of 7-10 days, but a vet can prescribe pain medication to help improve her comfort and also help reduce the swelling more quickly. In the meantime, a warm compress on the area for 10 minutes twice a day may help to recirculate the swelling. I would also try to minimize her activity by not letting her jump or run in the house.
