How to stop my dog from barking excessively and biting visitors?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 8 months and 21 days old

Hello. When no one is home, my dog excessively dogs and howls, causing our neighbours to complain, Im not sure how to deal with this as its now preventing me from going out. He also tries to bite and growls at anyone when walking him, or when we have visitors. He has never tried to bite the people whom live in the same home as him. Its causing loads of stress at home because we do not know how to deal with this sort of thing. The breed he is is a cocker spaniel x american akita.

Poor Bear! Excessive barking and howling when left alone is a very common sign of separation anxiety in dogs. Barking and growling at visitors and strangers on walks is also a very concerning behavior, especially in such a young dog. These are complicated problems that are difficult to address adequately in a forum like this, so I would strongly recommend making an appointment with someone who can help you in person. Ideally, it would be best to see a veterinary behaviorist who can evaluate Bear and help you put together a detailed training plan to work on these problems. This may include prescription anti-anxiety medication, since it sounds like his issues are fairly severe. You can ask your veterinarian to refer you to your nearest board-certified behaviorist for an evaluation and treatment plan.
