My cat has an eye infection with yellow mucus. Does she need a vet?

hi. my name is susan. i have a cat having eye infection for almost 10 day. i use cat eye antibiotic oilmentt and anti-inflation table once a day but no improvement. Now i can't see the eye ball already cover by a layer of yellow mucus. Please advice. Thanks.

Hi Susan. Lucy needs to see a vet immediately. It sounds like she is suffering from a severe infection, and the medications needed to treat these infections can only be gotten from a vet. OTC medications do not contain the strength needed to treat these things, antibiotics are by prescription only. The eye is such a delicate and important structure that any problem with it should be considered an emergency. That's because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. Please take Lucy into a vet right away to have her eye examined and the necessary medications prescribed to treat her condition. I hope this helps!

Mucous in the eye can be normal, but if it is a yellowish-greenish color or an excessive amount of it, then yes it is a concern. That would mean it was an eye infection. Should she have this excessive discharge or a discharge that is yellowish-greenish, then she will need an antibiotic ointment. I would call vets surrounding your area to find out where you can get her seen to get this antibiotic ointment, or check to see if there are any cat rescue organizations in your area who can help you.

It sounds like your kitty may have an eye infection, which could not be related to the antibiotics. It could also be due to trauma to the eye. Any eye condition is considered an emergency, as leaving them treated can lead to vision loss. I would take your kitty into a vet now. The vet can diagnose what is causing these changes in her eye, and how best to treat it.

Poor Ghost! You can use a soft wash cloth soaked in water or sterile saline, and wipe away any discharge, but unfortunately there are no OTC medications you can give her. She really does need to see a vet as soon as possible, as any eye problem is considered an emergency. This is because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. Have her seen by a vet as soon as possible.

My friend doesn’t have money to take her cat to the vet right now. Her kitten’s eyes has yellowish discharge. We have already cleaned them with water but it doesn’t solve the problem. What product can we get to help her eyes?
From the picture, it looks like Mow has a severe eye infection, and there are no OTC products that will cure this. This has to be treated with medications available only be prescription from the vet, and leaving this untreated can lead to vision loss. See if your friend can borrow money from family and friends to afford the vet, and I can give some resources that may help. She can see if her vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in her area, or she can apply for Care Credit online. There is also an organization called Red Rover that give grants for treatment of sick animals, and she can see if you qualify for one of their grants. My cats eye has puss coming out of it and we keep having to clean it.
This is a sign that Merlin's eye is infection. You need to take him into a vet immediately. Any eye problem is an emergency because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. The vet can prescribe medication to treat it. Best of luck.

I came home from vacation to see that my cat's right eye ia obviously bothering her. She's neen diagnosed with allergies but we haven't figured out what she is allergic to. She rubs it but it doesn't really seem to bother her and there's no discharge
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This could be due to an eye injury or conditions such as a corneal laceration, corneal ulcer, conjunctivitis, dry eye (also known as KCS), among many other conditions. There is always a concern about a corneal laceration in cats that have been rubbing at their eyes. This does warrant a veterinary evaluation. I highly recommend that you have Maisey evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Further therapy would be based on the findings. Good luck and best wishes!

My cat satin has mucus in his eyesamdis lethargic. No other symptoms. Barley opens his eyes. I wipe them with a warm cloth to clean them and then he can open them like normal for a couple hours but it comes back. Normal eating and activeness.
Poor Satin. : ( Closing of the eyes along with mucous discharge are signs of an eye infection. Eye infections in cats can be caused by an underlying viral infection or from some sort of corneal trauma (ulcer, scratch). Satin needs prescription eye antibiotic ointment to clear this up. Your vet can do a quick eye stain to diagnose the underlying problem and get him the necessary medication he needs, so schedule an appt with your vet within the next 24 hrs to get this taken care of quickly before the eye worsens. I hope your fur baby gets better soon!

Poor kitty. Kittens will often get eye infections due to viral and bacterial infections. Usually it will start off as a viral infection with just watery clear discharge and then a secondary bacterial infection will develop, causing yellow or green discharge. Therefore we recommend antiviral medication such as lysine powder which can be found at your local pet store over the counter. However the secondary bacterial infection will need to be treated with a topical antibiotic ointment prescribed by a veterinarian. They will need to be seen to treat the secondary eye infections unfortunately because there are no over-the-counter options for this . You can look for low-cost clinics in your area or the Humane society that may be able to get them in and seen for a reasonable price.
