My dog isn't pooping after sickness and antibiotic treatment, help!

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 7 years and 7 months old | 17 lbs

Hello! So my dog started off last week with serve weakness, loss of appetite, vomiting (bile), and dark colored urine. We took him to the vet on Friday and he was given antibiotics (amoxicillin) and metoclopramide. Since Saturday he has gained much more strength, increased his appetite, and has stopped vomiting completely. Problem is, he has not pooped since Friday morning (it is now Monday). I assumed, at first, that he was not pooping because he was not eating. But now that he has, I worry.

I’m glad Toby is feeling better. Try contacting your veterinarian and asking for a probiotic to help get Toby’s gut back in order. If he doesn’t have a bowel movement by tomorrow I would have him seen again by your vet just to make sure everything is okay and to keep him comfortable.

If he had several days of not eating then I wouldn’t be surprised if it takes 3-4 days to have a bowel movement. Take him for a nice long walk and often that will get things moving. If he doesn’t have a movement in another 24 hours or so then you may want to schedule a follow up appointment with your veterinarian. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.
