My dog has a facial puncture wound and swelling. Should I wait?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 7 months and 11 days old | 75 lbs

Last week I noticed my pup has a puncture wound in her face. It didn't seem to bother her at all. About two days ago her face started to swell. The local vet can't see her until Saturday. She acts as if unaffected but the swelling is substantial I believe. In the photos it's her right side and you can see the small puncture that has closed at the top.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Freyja! I would find a Vet that will see her today or tomorrow. I don’t think you should wait 4 more days. It appears to be an abscess (puss pocket from a bacterial infection) on the left side of her face. The abscess should be opened up, flushed and antibiotics and pain medications started. I hope this helps and I wish Freyja a speedy recovery!
