Why is my dog's tail surgery wound reopening with pus and a mass?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | unneutered | 10 years and 1 month old | 65 lbs

My golden underwent a surgical removal of soft tissue tumor frm his tail this oct. The stitches broke and it healed by secndry intntion. But last week he developed an abscess on the incision site on undersurface of tail. It was dressed and he was put on amoxclav for 5 days. The wound healed fast. But after a week now the skin has split open spontaneously and i could express small amount of pus frm the depths. Can see black mass, also 1 suture wel above this wound. Wat cud be the reason doc?

If i had to guess i would say that it's a bad reaction to the suture material that was used and has not dissolve completely yet. i suspect the wound will need to be open and investigate in order to remove any remaining old suture before being closed back or left open to heal with a topical cream and bandage.
