My dog's erect penis has red spots. Is it normal or a health concern?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boston Terrier | Male | 3 years and 11 months old | 18 lbs

Hi there, My 3 year old Boston Terrier recently had an erection and I had noticed on the penis (inside only) that he has some little red spots on it. Wondering if this is concerning at all of infection? He doesn’t seem to be licking the area in discomfort. I am just concerned as I have never seen his penis when erect so I am not sure if spots were there prior and are normal or not.

It is good that you are very observant of your pet. These red spots look like what’s called petechiae, which is abnormal bleeding under the skin. I would recommend getting Oshie examined by your vet to look for other areas on the body that also have this. Some common areas are the belly and gums. If bleeding is suspected then a blood test can be performed. Some common causes of this kind of bleeding abnormality is a coagulation disorder or any number of tick borne diseases. Most of these are treatable, and you have obviously caught this early on before it starts causing any major issues with Oshie, so that is good. I hope you get to the bottom of this soon. Best wishes with Oshie. Take care.
