My senior cat has a soft, pink neck lump that keeps coming back.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed

My cat has a lump on her neck, it is slightly pinkish in color and is dark around the top edge, the lump is soft and she has had it for a couple months, we took her to our vet a while ago and they drained it and said it was gone but it came back after a week. She is 17 years old and still healthy but I am concerned about this lump, what kind is it?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sadly a lot of skin masses can look the same. I always worry about Mast Cell tumors when I see a pink raised hairless skin mass. But since you said your Vet removed fluid and drained it means it could be a cyst. But just removing the fluid doesn't make it go away. The entire cyst would have to be removed. Since Winnie is still healthy and the mass seems small I would discuss surgically removing the mass and seeding it for biopsy. I hope this helps and I wish Winnie the best!

This lump needs to be checked and analysed as there are many conditions and types of tumors that could look like that. take her to the vet, they will perform a fine needle aspiration on the growth and send it to the lab for analysis. when the result comes, the vet will advise what needs to be done according to the diagnosis.
