My dog has a cut on his eyelid that's not healing. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 7 years and 10 months old | 14 lbs

Dog has a cut on his right eyelid (just above his eye). We noticed it 5 days ago. At first it just looked like a thin red line and was nearly unnoticable. Didn't do anything to treat it as it is so close to his eye. It doesn't seem to be healing and this morning almost looked like it was splitting open. The wound now looks larger and redder. After reading a bit, I've washed it with water and applied Bacitracin. He does not seem to be uncomfortable, but the appearance of the wound is alarming.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Hamlet! I think the first thing is to be sure Hamlet isn't rubbing the eye or pawing at it causing further damage and injury. He should wear and E-collar. Be very careful to not get the ointment in the eye. Only eye safe antibiotic ointments can go in the eye. You can try the E-collar and the ointment (as long as it is not getting in his eye) for the next few days. If the wound worsens or is not improved by Friday he needs to see your Vet. If he shows any eye discomfort (excessive blinking, keeping the eye closed, excessive tearing, yellow or green eye discharge or the whites of his eye are red) he needs to be seen by a Vet as soon as possible. I hope this helps and I wish Hamlet a speedy recovery!

It should heal on its own. But without really examining him in person myself it’s kind of hard to say with 100% certainty. I would just keep doing what you’re doing. Keep it clean and apply an anabiotic ointment 2-3 times per day. Be sure not to use any hydrogen peroxide as that will delay healing and could damage the eye if it gets on the eyeball.
