My cat has allergies and bites his leg. Can I give Depo Medrol myself?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 2 years and 9 months old | 14 lbs

My cat has allergy problems and begins to bite at his back leg until it's red and raw. We've taken him to the vet many times for the same problem and they give him a shot of Depo Medrol and the problem goes away for a while. The thing is it that it is costly, $55 each time. I found some inject-able Depo Medrol on Drs. Foster & Smith website, would it be safe to do it myself with it? And if so how much should I give him? He weighs around 14lbs, please help! :(

You will have to have the prescription sent to your vet for approval and it would be a good thing to talk with them about how to give it and how much it has taken in the past to keep the sign ms controlled since the dose can vary. I would be cautious if this plan long term since he is so young. This is a strong steroid that becomes less effective the more you give it and can have side effects such as diabetes, liver or kidney damage or heart failure in cats. I would look into other treatments for your allergies such a diet change or Apoquel daily
