Why does my unneutered dog have recurrent UTIs and lose weight?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Rottweiler | Male | unneutered | 12 years and 1 month old

Bear has had 2 episodes of UTI within 3mos of each other is there an underlying cause going on? He’s unneautered could he have a prostrate issue? He’s always been very healthy up to now. He gets a vet approved food, 2 cups in the morning and same in the evening. Fresh water of course! He’s also having problems keeping weight on. We increased his food to 5 cups now and are hoping to see improvement on the weight. Your help is very much appreciated!!!!

While UTIs can be common in dogs, it possible that Bear is suffering from chronic bacterial prostatitis. This may cause no clinical signs except for recurrent urinary tract infections. I recommend having him seen by a vet again, who can collect samples of his prostate fluid and urine. Prostatic fluid and urine can be submitted for cytologic and microbiologic examination to check for chronic bacterial prostatitis. Should he be suffering from it, neutering him is part of the recommended treatment. Good luck, I hope this helps.
