My dog's neuter incision is irritated. Is it an internal stitch?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 1 year and 2 months old

Panda has possibly got an internal stitch that's poking his skin as its right under the part of his neuter wound that isn't fully healed if so what can we do to help him he licks that area unless I have the e collar on and its been 19 days since he was done and external stitches came out on day 16 the vet noticed he had chewed the stitch and we left collar on and he still wears unless I'm watching advice as to what I should do .

It sounds like Panda may be having a reaction to the suture that is still under the skin. In these cases the dog typically needs to be put on an antibiotic and a steroid to help it clear up. I would recommend taking Panda back to the vet for another incision recheck and explain your concerns. This far out from surgery he should not have to wear the collar anymore unless there is an issue. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Panda! Can you post a picture of the incision? Sometimes there are minor complications to any surgery and incisions sometimes need more time to heal. If Panda is licking or bothering the incision that can cause delays too. If your Vet expected it to heal 2 days after the sutures were removed and it hasn't then I would recommend that you have the incision rechecked. Keep the E-collar on until then. I hope this helps and I wish Panda the best!
