Why is my service dog in training restless and panting during visits?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labradoodle | Female | unspayed | 6 months and 9 days old | 40 lbs

Hope is training as a service dog and currently lives with the trainer until her training is over. She come for over night visits with me now and then. Her last visit was a couple weeks ago, which was the first time in 3 months. She was kinda unsettled then. Getting up and laying down alot. I have her again for 2 nights now. She seems the same as last visit. Getting up and laying down alot, but she is panting alot now...all night. She's eating and potting fine. Playing too.

It sounds like Hope is just anxious in her new surroundings. Restlessness, pacing and panting are all signs of nervousness/anxiety. I’m sure the more time you two spend together the more accustomed she will be to staying at your new place. Practice commands with her and exercise her regularly to help drain some of her excess energy. If her behavior continues even when she is in her familiar environment she may need to be examined by a veterinarian to make sure nothing medical is going on. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
