Why is my dog not eating and has yellow poop after grain-free food?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 10 months old | 168 lbs

I switch my 3year old lab/pit to whole hearted lamb & Lentil 4 days into the switch he skipped 3 meals in a row as of now he is eating very little but his poop is clay texture and yellow

It sounds like Sprinkles doesn't like this food at all, and that may be why he stopped eating and is now eating very little. I see this food is grain free, and I'm not sure why you made this switch. The truth is that grain free food is a fad, and there is no scientific proof that grain free food helps dogs at all. Food allergies are rare in dogs, and the most common of food allergies is actually protein. That makes grain allergies quite rare. Grains are beneficial to dogs, they provide a source of energy and dogs like the taste of them. If he doesn't have a proven grain allergy, then I recommend switching him back to a food with grain. Brands I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. Also have him checked out by a vet to make everything is ok healthwise with him. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Thank you for your questions about Koda. I would not say that is normal and I suspect it may be a sign that he does not tolerate the new diet as well. The jury is still out on grain free food, some pets do well on it and other ones develop heart conditions and constipation issues. Most vets generally do not recommend them. I do advise changing the diet again. If you are looking for a nice food, I recommend a brand called Royal Canin. It is generally very easy to digest and most pets who eat this diet have nice coats, good stool quality and low stool quantity (a sign that the diet does not contain many fillers). Change the diet slowly over about a weeks time. If the diarrhea continues, have the stool checked for parasites as this can also cause changes to the stool. I hope you found this helpful. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Beuno. Stool problems in young dogs are most commonly caused by parasites or diet. I recommend having his veterinarian perform in depth stool testing to assess for parasites or other causes of gastrointestinal infections. If there is nothing found, then you may need to consider a diet change. I would recommend a prescription gastrointestinal diet that is formulated for use in puppies such as Purina Veterinary Diet EN. This is a highly digestible diet and many times can resolve the symptoms. You need to be careful with grain free diets as some have been associated with heart disease. They also tend to be quite high in carbohydrates which can lead to weight gain over time. I hope this information helps!

Your dog may have inflammation of his gastrointestinal tract or some other process going on causing his stomach to be upset. I would recommend having him seen by a vet who can do fecal testing, prescribe gastroprotective medication, and send him home with a bland diet.

Hello. It is strange to say from an internet source, but do not believe everything you read on the internet. I would switch your dog back to the Purina. It is one of the best foods from one of the most reputable companies out there. The only foods most veterinarians will recommend are the only companies that provide the proof & research that goes into making safe & complete diets. These are Purina, Science Diet & Royal Canin. I suggest you give him a bland diet of boiled or grilled chicken and cooked white rice for a couple of days. If you don't see improvement. I suggest a visit to the vet for a physical exam and an intestinal parasite exam. You might be dealing with digestive and discretion, food intolerance, allergies, intestinal parasites, and or less likely a more serious problem including a virus or a foreign body. For now though my first estimate would be that the food you gave him did not agree much with his stomach and G.I. tract. Changed my dogs dry food to James wellbeloved grain free. She seem alot more hungry than usual and has now been sick yellow foam on a morning twice. Am I not feeding her enough usual adds up to 50grames a day or is grain free not filling her up?
All brands have different feeding guidelines and some dogs can differ by up to 10% from the 'normal, recommended' amount to I recommend you check the bag carefully to see how much she should be expected to need daily. Grain free food does not suit all dogs, many domestic dogs digest processed cereals quite well and some do better on these than grain free brands. Sudden diet changes can cause mild gastrointestinal upset also, so if it is not settling over 5-7days I would return to her previous or a sensitive diet formula to see if it resolves again

If you suddenly switched his food without a gradual changeover, it can definitely cause digestive upset. I would pick up all food and then offer a bland meal of boiled chicken and rice to see if it helps settle his stomach, then try to feed his original diet until you decide on a new food. Products such as Science Diet, Purina, Royal Canin, etc all offer very high-quality foods and focus on a variety of issues such as sensitive stomachs, large breed, etc. When you do switch food, you'll want to switch over a period of 7-9 days, gradually adding in more of the new food each time, to help reduce the chances of digestive upset. if reverting to the old food doesn't help, or the GI upset worsens, a vet check and stool sample are best to rule out common issues such as parasites, allergies, etc that could be causing your pup's distress.

Benji was put on grain free food by his vet but I don't really think he needs grain free food or that it's a healthy choice. I have him on Blue buffalo grain free and want to switch to regular Blue buffalo is this a good decision and a healthy one?
Most pets do not have grain allergies. More commonly it's the protein source that causes allergies. For most dogs, grain free is not recommended. For general food, I recommend the brand Royal Canin. It is low residue and highly digestible and this results in great stool quality, minimal quantity and low odor. I also like Nutro and Purina Pro Plan. If you want to rule out a food allergy, the fastest way is a proper food trial using a hydrolyzed protein diet. I hope this helps.

My dog eats grain-free dog food, and lately he has had a very hard time going to the bathroom. He puked up a little bit of blood the other day. He has very strong flatulence and all the time. What do I need to change
He needs more fiber in his food. I do not recommend grain free food now since they have found an increase in heart disease in dogs that eat grain free exclusively. The research is ongoing but if he has flatulence and constipation I recommend switching diets. I use Hills food or recommend Nutro Naturals. You can also add plain canned pumpkin to his diet for added fiber but that may not help the gas. Vomiting blood once could be from a bone or stick. If it continues then that is a serious medical problem that needs veterinary care. Thanks for using Boop by Petco to help you care for your dog.

His poop is bright yellow b/c of his current diet (just rice and cottage cheese). He should have some protein in there, so I would suggest adding chicken or ground turkey. Also as long as he is not straining to poop, there is no cause for concern for the fewer stools, especially since he isn't eating anything with much substance. As long as he is acting normal, there is no major cause for concern here. Slowly transition him back to his normal diet once your vet says he is good to do so, and his stools should return to normal.
