Why does my older dog have a dark, metallic-smelling sore on his tail?

Question

Found a 0.5 inch open lesion, dark or grey base, metallic smelling, likely necrotic lesion at base of older dogs tail. No hair loss, some drainage, not bloody. Not painful. Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | 9 years and 11 months old | 85 lbs

It's possible it's a tumor, ruptured sebaceous cyst, puncture wound, foreign body, or other. Your vet can evaluate the lesion and advise treatment based on their findings. Once a diagnosis is made, a sound treatment plan can be implemented. Good luck
