Why does my older dog have a dark, metallic-smelling sore on his tail?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | 9 years and 11 months old | 85 lbs

Found a 0.5 inch open lesion, dark or grey base, metallic smelling, likely necrotic lesion at base of older dogs tail. No hair loss, some drainage, not bloody. Not painful

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Jack. Not sure what this is but you should have your veterinarian examine this. It's possible it's a tumor, ruptured sebaceous cyst, puncture wound, foreign body, or other. Your vet can evaluate the lesion and advise treatment based on their findings. Once a diagnosis is made, a sound treatment plan can be implemented. Good luck
