My dog has a bleeding, circular wound on his forehead. What is it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 2 years and 9 months old

My dog is small slightly overwheight dog, when I got home from work I noticed a small bump on his forehead, It was red the first day & by the second it became darker. I assumed he had a small bruise, it grew darker & I got worried so I put some would ointment on it, when I woke up today to walk him I noticed he was bleeding, as if the bump had scabbed up & peeled off, it still holds it’s circular shape but it’s a fresh wound. What could it be?

I have a few ideas in my head as to what this could be. Woody may have a boil or skin infection that has ruptured or come to a head. It seems less likely but a wart or other skin mass could have outgrown its blood supply and broken open. I would advise to wash it with an antibacterial soap once daily for 3-5 days. Apply a topical antibiotic to it twice a day. If it heals up, good. It was probably a minor infection. If it doesn't heal, make an appointment to have him seen at the vet for an exam.
