Why does my male dog's penis smell strange, but only sometimes?

My great Dane is 2 years old. Ever since I can remember he has always had a strange smell (awful smell) that I'm assuming comes from his penis. There is no discharge though and he doesn't lick it except every once in awhile like any other dog. What could it be? It's not constantly, the smell comes and goes. Pet's info: Dog | Great Dane | Male | neutered | 200 lbs

Hi. If it is a strong metallic like odor, I could be his analysis glands. I'd recommend getting him checked, but also add a spoonful of canned pumpkin to each meal long term. It helps with anal glands
